Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then located many other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important political figure said the attack left him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
